12 Days Of Christmas
This holiday season, Best Mommy Life wants to gift you with 12 days of restoration. Each day we will post one thing that we want to challenge you to do, and this one thing will challenge you to grow, will encourage you to change, and will gift you with something tangible to make your journey in this life a little bit easier. There is no gift better than what heals the soul, down deep where the core resides, to ease your life’s struggles and better face each day. We certainly hope you enjoy them and USE them to their fullest potential now and each day forward.
"Leave things better than you found them. One of the best things in your life, and ironically for yourself, is the ability to leave things better than you find them."
What this means is — regardless of the circumstance, location, work, relationship, or level of anxiety — you leave things better than you find them.
Before I say why you should leave things better than you find them… let’s talk about a scenario. Envision, if you will, a city with a population of 100 people. Each month, 3 people leave the city and move somewhere else, and 3 new people come to the city to live. Each of the three new people that leave make the city worse than before… not by a whole lot, but we’ll say, by 1%. The other people would start to eventually notice that things were getting worse, but maybe not be able to identify what was wrong exactly. After all, it’s only 3% per month. But let’s do the math on this… in one year, that means that the town is 36% worse than it was when it started. In three years, that’s 108%. The point here is to show just how quickly things can add up when each person leaving only makes things 1% worse. Over time, it really adds up!
Now lets take this same scenario and flip it. Lets say that each person leaving makes things 1% better. Well, the math is no different… so that would mean that in three years, the town is 108% better! It’s mind blowing if you think about it. It only takes a little bit of something to make a big difference. So what are some things we can do to leave things better than we found them?
"Sometimes stores are severely understaffed, and anything you can do to make their lives a little easier will go a long way. Be the person that takes their shopping cart back to the shopping cart area."
Become the person that would be missed if they were not there. Clean up after yourself, and then some. Help other people who may need an extra hand. If you go somewhere, and you see that there is an out-of-control mess… take a minute to make it a little better. You may not be able to completely fix everything, but even the smallest amount of tidying can really be helpful.
There have been so many times that I’ve been at the store and I will find an isle or area that is in complete disarray. Do what you can to make things better my straightening up or folding tossed clothing. Sometimes stores are severely understaffed, and anything you can do to make their lives a little easier will go a long way. Be the person that takes their shopping cart back to the shopping cart area. It amazes me that people don’t do this, and sometimes I can see that maybe it was for a good reason, but more times than not it’s because people can be lazy. Take the time to move them to their proper place if you can.
At the office, restock items that need to be restocked. Pick up trash or vacuum regularly. Do a little bit extra each day. Take a few minutes to look around and I’ll bet you can find at least one thing to do each day to make things better. Refill the copy machine paper or organize the supply closet. Even if all of these things are already completed, you can find other things to do with your personal role like do a few extra tasks per day. Even if you do only one extra thing per day, that’s about 25 extra things per month! Not only will you gain personal satisfaction, you’ll also be doing better at your job and it will not go unnoticed.
"Other things can be random, like adding a
few coins to an expired
car meter. Maybe someone just needs a helping hand
or help finding something
that is lost."
Walk outside your home and find things that need to be tidied. This is a great chore to do, and usually the kids love helping! Even if it’s something as small as picking up random pieces of trash on the ground, it really does make things look better for everyone.
We can also leave our friends and family better than we found them. Complement them or help them clean up a little after a get-together. Help them with a problem or issue that they are facing. Offer to watch the kids or run to the store for them if they need last minute help. Bring storage containers or cleaning supplies for them to assist with the aftermath of family functions. They will surely not forget it!
Other things can be random, like adding a few coins to an expired car meter. Maybe someone just needs a helping hand or help finding something that is lost. Maybe you can help them by listening, or being patient with them when they need extra time. Let someone in line that seems to be in a hurry go before you, or when driving let them go first or slow down to let them change lanes. It doesn’t have to be hard to make things better for someone else each day. But as we’ve already discussed, even very little things can add up over time. Being consistent with leaving things better than you find them not only helps to make the world a better place, it also helps us with ourselves. The feeling we get from making things better helps us to be at peace with our conscience, and helps our mental state of mind. It’s truly a win-win!
