12 Days Of Christmas
This holiday season, Best Mommy Life wants to gift you with 12 days of restoration. Each day we will post one thing that we want to challenge you to do, and this one thing will challenge you to grow, will encourage you to change, and will gift you with something tangible to make your journey in this life a little bit easier. There is no gift better than what heals the soul, down deep where the core resides, to ease your life’s struggles and better face each day. We certainly hope you enjoy them and USE them to their fullest potential now and each day forward.
"Spend some time in nature. Being outside has enormous amounts of benefits."
The connection with nature is great for our wellbeing, and gives us a sense of peace and puts us in an overall pleasant mood. It certainly reduces stress, and makes us more creative. The sounds of nature are calming and allow us to see and feel things that we never could inside. It also improves our health, because being exposed to the outdoors allows us to be exposed to things that help our immune systems later on.
One study showed that being exposed to the outdoors through a walk in the woods, or even looking at images of nature, improved memory and cognitive ability by 20%. (Journal of Environmental Psychology, Volume 25, Issue 3, Pgs. 249-360.) This is because we have time to replenish our directed attention (as opposed to involuntary attention, which pulls our minds to something immediate) and find things that we would not otherwise notice if we didn’t direct our attention to them.
If you’re driving, you are using mainly involuntary attention because you are focusing on things you have to notice such as an oncoming vehicle or a traffic light. When we aren’t using involuntary attention, and are concentrating on directed attention, we recharge that part of our brains that cause us to be relaxed and purposeful. We aren’t pulled in the direction that we are forced to be pulled in, we instead direct ourselves to focus on the things that we aren’t forced to notice. This type of attention use is wonderful for attention deficit, anxiety, hyperactivity, and other complications that we face every day.
"Select a campsite and spend the night outside camping. Some of the best family memories are made while camping, and it really allows a nice break for spending quality time together and just talking about life."
Looking to spend a free hour, day, or long weekend in the ideal natural place? Check out Recreation.gov to find local national and state parks, campsites, picnic areas, or day hikes. Children especially love to be outside and this is a great way to spend time with them. Go on a hike or walk. Pack some drinks and snacks, some insect repellent, and a few necessities and take off exploring. Select a campsite and spend the night outside camping. Some of the best family memories are made while camping, and it really allows a nice break for spending quality time together and just talking about life.
Find something about the outdoors that you want to learn more about and go for it! Are you a plant person? Get a pocket guide and go identify some trees, flowers, or plants that are local to your area. Knowing plants and their characteristics is a great skill to have, especially when you need to stay away from them. Do you enjoy birdwatching? If so, get outside and do a little. Birds are fascinating creatures and their songs are really amazing. Many state parks have birdwatching areas and exhibits for learning about birds. Another hobby that is popular while outdoors is photography. Taking pictures can be a great way to enjoy your time, and could also be a way to earn a little extra income. Taking beautiful pictures is a great way to be outside and find things that you wouldn’t otherwise see.
"Skip the gym and do something outdoors instead. Biking, hiking, rafting, repelling, or simply trail walking is a great way to burn calories and get
a chance to be outdoors while doing it."
Do you enjoy exercising? Skip the gym and do something outdoors instead. Biking, hiking, rafting, repelling, or simply trail walking is a great way to burn calories and get a chance to be outdoors while doing it. You could even spend some time in a certain area practicing yoga. Exercising outdoors is a great way to boost your physical health and mental health at the same time. The fresh, open air to breathe and feel on our skin can be extremely gratifying.
Even if you’re not the “outdoor-sy type”, there are many ways to enjoy the outdoors without all the negatives. If packing for an overnight stay in the woods is a little too much, just take a day trip instead. Plan a picnic with the family and enjoy a meal together at a serene location. Go with other people that are more familiar with being outside and can help you be more comfortable with nature. Take a vacation by renting a cabin instead of staying in a hotel. Go at a time of year that isn’t too hot or too cold for your liking. Play music that helps you be a peace with being outside. Anything that you can do to help make the outdoors experience a little easier is perfectly fine.
The benefits of being outside are truly felt both physically and mentally. There is nothing that can replace the beauty and calming sense of nature when outside. Focus on spending quality time outdoors while doing something you love!
