12 Days Of Christmas - Day 4
This holiday season, Best Mommy Life wants to gift you with 12 days of restoration. Each day we will post one thing that we want to challenge you to do, and this one thing will challenge you to grow, will encourage you to change, and will gift you with something tangible to make your journey in this life a little bit easier. There is no gift better than what heals the soul, down deep where the core resides, to ease your life’s struggles and better face each day. We certainly hope you enjoy them and USE them to their fullest potential now and each day forward.
"Engage in random (or planned!) acts of kindness. The cool thing about random acts of kindness is that they are typically extremely spontaneous."
You can think of a few things that you’d like to do in advance, but usually they need to be fit for the occasion. Being alert and aware of what is going on around you will help you to know when the time is right to step up and be kind to someone in need. This is something that can be done all year round, not just during the holidays, but with the extra stress added during the holiday season… it’s especially needed now.
You don’t necessarily need money to perform random acts of kindness either; some of the smallest things to help people are just as good as monetary help. Acts of kindness are contagious, and usually when you are kind to other people they want to do the same thing for others as well.
"People enjoy being around other people who notice the little things and are friendly. It really is a win-win situation for both you
One thing that is easily overlooked these days is to hold doors open for people, especially the elderly. This small act of kindness is so simple yet so very respectful. It’s an easy yet heartfelt way to brighten someone’s day and make their load a little lighter. It is also very easy to give compliments to people. Find something about the person, whether it’s their attire or something they did, to compliment them on. If you look closely enough, they are easy to find.
It always makes people feel better to have someone say something nice about them… and the best thing is, it costs nothing to be complimentary of someone! People enjoy being around other people who notice the little things and are friendly. It really is a win-win situation for both you and them!
People always enjoy receiving things in the mail. Another idea to spread kindness is to send someone a card or letter. Although it does take a small amount of money and a little time, the personal effect is extraordinary. Another way to really show kindness is to visit people while they are in the hospital or at a nursing home. The extreme amount of joy that people receive from being given this kind of attention is something they will remember for a very long time.
There are also many ways to volunteer your time doing special things for others. Many elderly people with no family near them need special people to visit them and let them know that they are not alone. The joy this brings them is amazing.
"Have you been invited over for a get together? Stay afterward and help them clean up once everyone has left. It is certainly a great way to be kind to
those you love."
One of the best gifts you can give friends and family is help. Maybe you have a friend that recently had a baby, or a family member that is having to recover from surgery. It costs nothing to plan a visit to their home and do laundry, cleaning, cooking, or anything that they might need help with. Have you been invited over for a get together? Stay afterward and help them clean up once everyone has left. It is certainly a great way to be kind to those you love. Do you have a friend who is in desperate need of some alone time or a date night? Be the person who volunteers to watch the kids while your friend gets some alone time or time with their spouse. There are so many ways to help other people, and none of them are wrong.
During the hot summer or cold winter, leave water bottles or Gatorade on your doorstep with a note for mail carriers and delivery people to help themselves. You can even take some with you to hand out to public service workers, security guards, or anyone you run into that might need it. If you know someone that is having a wedding, suggest that they donate the surplus of flowers to a nursing home. Donate unwanted magazines or books to nursing homes as well.
If you are a business owner, this is an amazing way to give. Whether it be free meals for the homeless, free dry cleaning for people looking for a job, or free coaching sessions for people who need some mentoring help… making a point to help those who are less fortunate is quite a fulfilling way to be kind. If people find out that a business is doing these things, they usually go out of their way to support it.
"Listening is a lost art in the world we live in today. Take the time to just listen to someone..."
Finally, make it a point to listen to other people. Sometimes doing something as simple as listening can be the best gift to give. It is hard to listen to other people, but make a point to ask them questions and give them a chance to share what is on their minds without thinking of the next thing to say back to them. Listening is a lost art in the world we live in today. Take the time to just listen to someone instead of wanting to be heard. It will make a profound difference in your relationships!
